National Exam

The USNCO national exam is a three-part, four and one-half hour exam administered in late April by ACS local sections to nearly 900 students annually. Part I is a 90-minute, 60-item multiple choice examination covering a broad range of topics. Part II, a 105-minute, eight question, free response section, requires written responses for a multi-step problem requiring in depth knowledge of chemical theories and models. Part III, the 75-minute, two-item laboratory practical, seeks to evaluate students' ability to problem-solve in the laboratory. The three sections may be administered in any order.

Each participating local section is sent at least eight national exams with additional exams sent to larger sections. To promote widespread participation within a local section, no more than two students per school are allowed to sit for the exam. A complete listing of USNCO rules explains all the conditions for the competition.

Laboratory Practical

In order to select students with better lab skills, who may be more competitive at the study camp and in the IChO, a two-item laboratory practical was added to the USNCO national exam in 1994. With nearly 900 students at nearly 150 sites taking the exam, the laboratory practical attempts to evaluate the students' abilities to problem-solve in a laboratory setting, to articulate their methods, to conduct an experiment, and to manage their time with multiple tasks. These are the same skills that are necessary for success at the IChO.

As a result, the laboratory exercises are open-ended. To maximize safety and minimize waste and cost, small-scale chemistry and household items are used when possible.

Local Competitions

ACS local sections are vital to the success of the USNCO. They conduct local competitions to select nominees for the national exam. Local sections select their nominees by various means including: the USNCO local section exam, a locally-prepared exam, laboratory practicals, teacher recommendations, or other regional events with competitive activities among school teams. Local competitions usually occur in March.

In addition to selecting nominees, the local competitions serve to encourage a large number of students to excel in chemistry by comparing their knowledge to national and international levels. Both the local and national competitions provide a forum for interactions between students, teachers, and other chemists. Often, local sections recognize their top students with monetary or other awards. Recognition certificates are available free of charge through the ACS DivCHED Examinations Institute.

The USNCO Local Section examination is available (for a charge) through the ACS DivCHED Exams Institute. It is a 60-item,110-minute multiple choice exam. Local sections are encouraged to provide additional questions as a tie-breaker in the event that several students have the same score.
