The Indian National Chemistry Olympiad Examination (INChO) is normally conducted in April or May every year. The Indian team of participants for the International Chemistry Olympiad is selected from among those who perform well in INChO.
Top 1% of students selected on the basis of their performance in the National Standard Examination in Chemistry (NSEC) are eligible to appear for the INChO examination. Any student studying at the higher secondary level (junior college, or class XI and XII) in the science faculty may appear for the NSEC.
INChO examinations are conducted over two days and include both theory as well as practical tasks (problems). The duration of the theory and practical examinations is 4 hours each. The examinations are held at 10 to 12 different Centres located in different parts of India.
The theory examination of the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad carries 120 points and is set on the lines of the International Chemistry Olympiad examinations and may have problems from various disciplines of chemistry including introductory biochemistry. Part of the tasks may be of multiple choice type. Students appearing for the INChO examination are expected to study the course material prescribed for the IIT-JEE( syllabus).

An important aspect of INChO is the practical examination, which carries substantial weightage (80 points). During the practical examination, a detailed procedure of the experiment is presented to participants. Participants are not expected to design an experiment. However, the examination will be at an advanced level in comparison to the practical syllabus covered in normal higher secondary level (junior college) courses. Any new skill required in doing the given task will be explained in the procedure. Click here for the INChO 1999 practical paper. It will help participants to be familiar with the experiments included in the syllabus at the higher secondary level of CBSE. They should also be familiar with some experiments performed at the graduate level.
The results of INChO are declared within 6 to 8 days of the examination. All entrants to INChO are informed about the status of their selection to the training camp for the International Chemistry Olympiad held soon after.
